Post-Purchase AI Agents: What I’d Automate Today, and What I’d Fix First

Key Takeaways

  • Stores that get the most from a post-purchase AI agent treat it as a piece of their support operation. It handles what can be undone, like address changes and in-policy returns, and hands anything involving judgment to a person.
  • If you want to answer your current WISMO volume faster, an agent is a great buy. If you want fewer WISMOs, you need shipping updates that land before the shopper starts wondering.
  • Three things to check before you buy: where your notifications go quiet, how long a label sits before its first scan, and which regions keep missing the delivery window you promised.

If you run post-purchase support with a small team, an AI agent can cover volume you don’t have the headcount for, and for the right tasks I’d put one to work today.

The mistake we see is buying one to make ‘where is my order’ (WISMO) tickets go away. An agent will clear those faster than your team can. What it can’t do is stop them, because they come from a gap in your shipping notifications, and that gap is cheaper to close than an agent seat.

Michael Bernal, our Head of Growth at CWILL, spends most of his merchant conversations on order tracking and returns and has seen stores learn this the hard way. Below is where he and I agree an agent is worth the money, and the audit we’d run before deciding.

What Is a Post-Purchase AI Agent?

A post-purchase AI agent is software that acts on an order after checkout. This is different from a chatbot that simply answers users’ questions. An AI agent handles real work like changing a shipping address before the label prints or turning a return request into an exchange without anyone at the store touching it.

The usual reason for incorporating an AI Agent is scale. It lets you take on work you can’t cover with the team you have.

When to Use AI Agents in Post-Purchase

The best use cases for AI agents in post-purchase are for the actions your team considers reversible.

A reversible action is one you can take back, or fix with a quick follow-up if it goes wrong. An irreversible action can’t be taken back. An AI agent that makes the wrong refund decision costs you money you never get back.

Here’s how the common post-purchase tasks sort by that test:

Automate it (you can undo it)Keep a person on it (you can’t undo it)
Order status and tracking questionsRefunds or credits outside your written policy
Delivery estimatesDamage and wrong-item claims that turn on evidence
Address changes before the label printsShoppers who are already angry
Returns that fall inside your policyLegal or safety issues
Turning a return request into an exchangeOne-time exceptions for a high-value customer

Use Case 1: Fielding Order-Status Questions

Michael commonly sees merchants connecting order tracking and returns tools to an AI agent so it can field simple inquiries like order status before a person has to.

“It’s a piece of their operation that matters,” Michael told me, “but they don’t look at the AI agent answering customer questions as a solution to good customer service.”

Use Case 2: Turning a Return Into an Exchange

Michael recently watched a demo of Klaviyo’s Customer Agent where it took a return request from a shopper in Europe at 2 a.m. store time. The agent asked why the customer wanted to return the item, pitched an exchange instead of a refund, and created the exchange request on its own. Nobody at the store touched it until the product came back for inspection.

“Compared to just giving customers a self-serve portal where they choose their own path, this was way more consultative. It got to the bottom of what the person was looking for and then did the actual work. And it’s less work for the store,” says Michael.

Why an AI Agent Won’t Reduce Your WISMO Tickets

Post-purchase is the only part of commerce where a brand makes promises about things it doesn’t control. The order is yours, but the package belongs to a carrier, the warehouse belongs to a 3PL (third-party logistics), and the return sits in someone else’s portal. An agent can’t tell a shopper where their package is if you don’t know either.

DigitalGenius, a support-automation vendor, found that 21% of the support queries across its customer base were some version of “where is my order,” or WISMO.

The cause behind a WISMO ticket is often a customer hearing nothing for four or five days until a “shipped” email shows up.

When vendors say AI agents deflect 40 to 60% of WISMO contacts, they mean the agent answered those questions instead of a person. The questions still came in. What stops a shopper from asking is an update that reaches them first, and an agent that only answers questions can’t send one. Some agent platforms also send shipping updates. When they do, the updates are what cut your WISMO.

Think of a leaking faucet. The agent is the cup you put under it: the cup fills, you buy a bigger cup, and the faucet keeps dripping. If you want to keep your current WISMO volume and answer it faster, an agent is a great buy. If you want fewer WISMO tickets, fix the faucet.

Michael puts it more bluntly: “WISMO is the smoke burning off a fire of unmet customer expectations and poor communication. Just answering WISMO with an AI chatbot is not giving the customer the experience you want.”

The fix is a notification schedule built on your real shipping times. If a package takes five days to get its first carrier scan, send an update on day two and again on day four. It doesn’t have to carry news: “your order is being packed” works. The shopper just needs to know they haven’t been forgotten.

What to Audit Before Buying an AI Agent

Before deciding on an AI agent, audit your process for the fixable causes. Three places to look:

  1. Your notification timeline: Map every automated message from order confirmation to delivery against your real fulfillment and transit times. The longest stretch of silence is your WISMO generator.
  2. Your label-to-pickup lag: If a label prints on Monday and the carrier scans it on Thursday, the shopper got a “shipped” email and then watched a tracking page sit still for three days.
  3. Your regional delivery times: Michael’s example: a store averaging 3.5 days domestic and 7 to 8 days to the EU, while the website promises one number. There’s no universal cutoff. The trigger is running past the window you set the expectation for.

If the audit turns up gaps, fix those first. If it doesn’t, an agent is a fair buy.

What Shoppers Think of AI Support

Shoppers haven’t signed on to a fully automated post-purchase experience yet. In a Gartner survey of 5,728 customers, 64% said they’d prefer companies didn’t use AI for customer service, and 53% would consider switching to a competitor over it. The top concern was that it would get harder to reach a person.

What shoppers want is a resolution, and a human has historically been the only thing that reliably delivered one.

Klarna is the cautionary tale. In early 2024, it announced its AI assistant was doing the work of 700 full-time agents. By May 2025 it was hiring support staff again, with CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski saying customers needed to know “there will always be a human if you want.”

Should You Buy a Post-Purchase AI Agent?

Most of the WISMOs an agent would answer for you come from a gap in your notifications, and closing that gap costs less than any agent seat. Once shoppers hear from you at the right moments, an agent handling the reversible leftovers is a good buy.

The notifications are the part we can help with. CWILL Order Tracking sends branded shipping updates automatically from dispatch to delivery, so shoppers hear from you before they have to ask.

Frequently Asked Questions

What post-purchase decisions should stay with a human?

Post-purchase decisions should stay human for anything that spends money outside a written rule, like goodwill credits or out-of-window refunds. So should damage and wrong-item claims, because they turn on judging evidence, and any conversation where the shopper is already angry. Legal or safety issues and one-time exceptions for a high-value customer belong with a person too.

Do AI agents reduce WISMO tickets?

No, AI agents don’t reduce WISMO tickets. They answer WISMO faster, which is useful, but they don’t change why the tickets arrive. Vendor deflection figures count tickets an agent answered. Those tickets still came in. WISMO comes from silence: the shopper hasn’t heard anything in days and doesn’t know whether the order is moving.

Do customers mind talking to AI for support?

Many customers say they do mind talking to AI for support. In Gartner’s survey of 5,728 customers, 64% preferred that companies didn’t use AI for customer service and 53% would consider switching over it, with reaching a human the top concern. The safe design is an agent that resolves fast and hands off to a person without friction.

Are post-purchase AI agents the same as AI shopping agents?

No, post-purchase AI agents aren’t the same as AI shopping agents. AI shopping agents act on behalf of the shopper, researching products and completing purchases. Post-purchase AI agents work for the brand after checkout, answering order questions and handling returns and exchanges, with a handoff to your team when a case needs judgment.
